The Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales announces with regret the cancellation of the planned expansion project at École secondaire catholique de La Vérendrye as announced in October 2024.
Initially approved by the Ministry of Education, this project involved the addition of a gymnasium and renovations to the school. Planned funding amounted to 5,306,509 $, thanks to joint support from the Aurores boréales CSDC and the Ministry of Education via the Canada-Ontario Official Languages Immo Financing.
Following the call for tenders, the Board had to make the difficult decision to cancel the project, as the bids received from contractors considerably exceeded the budget allocated by the Ministry. Despite all efforts to find alternative solutions, the financial gap proved insurmountable in the current economic climate.
"It is with deep disappointment that we announce this decision," says Claudette Gleeson, President of the Board. "We recognize the importance of this project to our students and to the entire francophone community of Thunder Bay."
The Board would like to thank all those who contributed to the development of this project, especially the Ministry of Education for its initial support. The Aurores boréales CSDC remains committed to providing quality learning spaces that meet the needs of its francophone school community.
