The Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales received approval from the Ministry of Education to add a gymnasium and carry out renovation work at École secondaire catholique de La Vérendrye.
Funded by the CSDC des Aurores boréales and the Ministry of Education through the Canada-Ontario funding programs for official languages, the project will amount to $5,306,509.
Located in Thunder Bay, the new gymnasium at ÉSC de La Vérendrye will primarily be dedicated to activities for the school’s grade 7 and 8 students, and for elementary students from École catholique Franco-Supérieur.
Students will also benefit from a new stage designed to accommodate larger-scale performances, which will enrich the school's cultural and sports initiatives. This project will not only be beneficial for students but also have a direct impact on the Francophone community. By providing a modern and inclusive gathering space, it will help strengthen the sense of belonging and community pride. The new gymnasium and versatile facilities will create a place where community members can collaborate and celebrate Francophone culture.
"This funding supports the expansion of the school to provide students and the Thunder Bay community with a new, modern space for sports and gatherings," explains Trustee Claudette Gleeson, Chair of the CSDC des Aurores boréales. "With this expansion, we will better meet the needs of our school community by offering a stimulating, inclusive, and collaborative environment. This versatile space will strengthen the bonds between students, families, and community members, becoming a place for sharing, learning, and celebration."
“Our government is committed to investing in Ontario's communities by building modern, well-equipped schools and daycares,” said Jill Dunlop, Minister of Education. “Our investment in a new gymnasium for École secondaire catholique de La Vérendrye reflects our commitment to supporting the growth and development of our students. I'm thrilled to see this new space come to life and look forward to the positive impact it will have on Thunder Bay's children and families.”
The CSDC des Aurores boréales will launch a call for tenders to hire a contractor to execute the project, which is expected to be completed by the winter of 2026.
