The junior boys’ volleyball team from École secondaire catholique de La Vérendrye made history on November 11, 2024, by winning their first SSSAA championship since 2011 in a memorable match against Westgate Collegiate & Vocational Institute. With fewer than 200 students, the school demonstrated that exceptional teamwork and unwavering commitment can triumph over opponents from a school five times their size.

For Giorgio Scimeca, teacher and coach, this victory was significant: “They came so close to winning the elementary tournament in Grade 8 two years ago. It's an immense source of pride to see them win this championship while I'm still their coach. This victory reflects their dedication and progress as athletes.”

Jessie Scott, teacher and coach, also highlighted the players’ patience and resilience: “Our athletes were very patient with us. We never would have imagined winning a championship with one coach who plays hockey and another who plays soccer! But their determination was key. Seeing their pride when the final point lit up on the scoreboard was an unforgettable moment.”

A victory fueled by a united community

This event brought the entire community together to support the Vipères. The stands were packed with fans dressed in blue, proudly displaying the colours of ÉSC de La Vérendrye.

Armed with pom-poms, spectators of all ages—parents, alumni, future students, and staff—cheered passionately for their team. The electrifying atmosphere even prompted referees to call for calm at times, a testament to the shared passion and pride of everyone present.

The Vipères’ junior volleyball team proved that passion, collective effort, and community support can surpass all expectations. This historic victory will remain etched in the school’s memory and inspire future players to continue the legacy.

The Vipères dominated Westgate CVI 3-0 and claimed the championship title previously held by St. Patrick High School.
